5 Essential Steps to Starting Your Podcast

So, you’ve been wanting to start a podcast… now what? I wish it was as easy as simply pressing ‘record’ on your voice memo app! The truth is there is a lot that goes into starting a podcast; much of which I wish I knew before starting ours! Rather than learn these lessons the hard way, today I want to give you 5 actionable steps that you can take to have your voice heard around the world!

Define Your Podcast Concept

The very first thing you need to do is determine the theme, topic, or niche you want to focus on with your podcast. I’m sure you already have one in mind! Consider your target audience and what type of content will resonate with them specifically. Then, develop a unique selling proposition (USP) that sets your podcast apart from others in the same genre. A well-defined concept will guide your content creation and help retain listeners!

Plan Your Episodes & Format

Next, outline the structure and format of your podcast episodes. Decide on the length of each episode, the segments you’ll include, and how you’ll present your content. Determine whether you’ll have solo episodes, interviews, discussions, storytelling, or a combination of formats! (If you decide you want to have guests, you’ll need to start reaching out sooner rather than later to ensure there is time in each person’s schedule.) Planning your episodes in advance helps maintain consistency and keeps your content organized. Not to mention, it makes it easier for you, the host, to hit record!

Build Your Recording Studio

When you have great equipment, the mics will pick up every.thing. so the quieter the environment, the better! With that being said, it doesn’t need to be fancy, but I highly recommend you invest in quality podcasting equipment from day 1. Here’s what you’ll need minimally to produce a great show: external microphone (an absolute must have!), headphones (these are my favorite), and audio recording /editing software (Squadcast is what we use and love!). A few other items you may want to consider are a pop filter, microphone stand, and/or soundproofing materials for your space.

Record + Edit Your Episodes

Now we get to the fun part – sitting down and recording! I recommend recording your episodes based on your planned content. Make sure to speak clearly, confidently, and engage your listeners. Also, record both audio AND video for each episode so that you are able to create social media assets that market each episode to your online audience! After recording, edit your episodes to remove any mistakes, improve audio quality, and enhance the overall listening experience. This will be your most technical step!

Release it Into the World

You’ll need to select a podcast hosting platform that suits your needs; ones that provide storage, distribution, and analytics. These are a few popular to consider: Libsyn (this is what we use and love), Buzzsprout, and RedCircle. Upload your edited episodes to the platform, fill in episode details (crucial – don’t skip this!) and choose appropriate categories and tags. When this is all complete, publish your episode and submit to directories like Apple Podcasts and Spotify!

Believe me when I say – creating a successful podcast takes time and consistency. Continuously refine your content, engage with listeners, and promote your podcast through social media to grow your audience over time!
